Welcome to House of Whispering Firs. " Acute Abstract " Original Mosaic Art. Size: 32" x 12" x 1 1/2. House of Whispering Firs is proud to offer this original mosaic titled " Acute Abstract " by Kathy Thompson, Newberg, Oregon. Her abstracts are made with tiles varying in thickness and often layered making the piece 3 dimensional.

This interesting piece is hung vertically. The reverse side is felted to protect your walls. Kathy's mosaics are not only beautifully designed and crafted; but, unusual in the fact that she actually makes all the tiles from scratch. After drawing her design and making a pattern, she hand cuts rolled out clay conforming to the pattern.. After the clay pieces dry, they go through a kiln bisque firing.

They are then individually painted with glaze and fired again to vitrify (make glass like). Now, the tiles are ready to incorporated into mosaic art. Kathy uses cement board as the base for most of her flat pieces. It's strong, weather resistant and extremely durable. After the cement board is cut to size, hooks or hanging devices are installed. Now, the real fun begins! Each tile is hand placed and adhered to the board. When the adhesive is dried, the project is grouted, sealed and felt applied to the back.. The edges of these mosaics are all finished, glazed tiles, with no exposed edges. All of our mosaics and tiles are suitable for outdoor use with care. They should not be left outdoors, exposed to the elements, in areas of the country that experience harsh winter conditions with ice, snow and /or repeated freezing and thawing conditions.
